TPP Maritsa East 2 EAD is the biggest innovated thermal power plant in the Republic of Bulgaria and on the Balkan Peninsula. The first sod for its construction was turned on 7 May 1962 and on 25 October 1966 the first unit of the power plant was built and commissioned. Two weeks later, on 10 November, the official opening of TPP Maritsa East 2 EAD took place.
The power plant has eight power units and all of them operate with modern desulphurization facilities constructed. It is located in the south-eastern part of the country, at 280 km of Sofia and 60 km from Stara Zagora. TPP Maritsa East 2 EAD operates with local lignite coal extracted at Mini Maritsa East EAD mines. The subject of activity of the power plant is generation and sale of electricity, provision of cold reserve, balancing power, primary and secondary regulation of frequency and voltage. Its total capacity is 1620 MW which turns it into a major electricity generator satisfying the needs of households and businesses both in the country and abroad. TPP Maritsa East 2 EAD is a strategic site of national importance and its capital is 100% owned by Bulgarian Energy Holding EAD.
The power plant complies with all Bulgarian and European requirements for environmental protection. The company has an Environmental Management System and a Quality Management System which are certified by the authorized bodies TÜV Rheinland Inter Cert- Brussels and TÜV Rheinland Bulgaria EOOD. Both systems are subject to continuous specialized audits, the results of which evidence flawless operation and compliance with all requirements.
Continuous introduction of innovative technologies with a view to increasing the level of automatization, control and security is among the main commitments of TPP Maritsa East 2 EAD management. Use of contemporary methods for modernization leads to a significant decrease in generation costs of the power plant and provision of a quality service for consumers.
